离婚诉讼被告缺席需要开庭，无正当理由缺席可能缺席判决。《民事诉讼法》第六十二条规定：“离婚案件有诉讼代理人的，本人除不能表达意志的以外，仍应出庭；确因特殊情况无法出庭的，必须向人民法院提交书面意见。”第一百三十条规定：“被告经传票传唤，无正当理由拒不到庭的，或者未经法庭许可中途退庭的，可以缺席判决。”因此离婚案件缺席审理最常见情形为：一种是被告下落不明而采用公告送达缺席审理；另一种是被告经传票传唤无正当理由拒不到庭而缺席审理。
