医疗保险一般指基本医疗保险，是为了补偿劳动者因疾病风险造成的经济损失而建立的一项社会保险制度。通过用人单位与个人缴费，建立医疗保险基金，参保人员患病就诊发生医疗费用后，由医疗保险机构对其给予一定的经济补偿。
医疗保险的好处：
1、有利于提高劳动生产率，促进生产的发展。医疗保险是社会进步、生产发展的必然结果。反过来，医疗保险制度的建立和完善又会进一步促进社会的进步和生产的发展。一方面医疗保险解除了劳动者的后顾之忧，使其安心工作，从而可以提高劳动生产率，促进生产的发展。另一方面也保证了劳动者的身心健康，保证了劳动力正常再生产；
2、调节收入差别，体现社会公平性。医疗保险通过征收医疗保险费和偿付医疗保险服务费用来调节收入差别，是政府一种重要的收入再分配的手段；
3、维护社会安定的重要保障。医疗保险对患病的劳动者给予经济上的帮助，有助于消除因疾病带来的社会不安定因素，是调整社会关系和社会矛盾的重要社会机制；
4、促进社会文明和进步的重要手段。医疗保险和社会互助共济的社会制度，通过在参保人之间分摊疾病费用风险，体现出了一方有难，八方支援的新型社会关系，有利于促进社会文明和进步；
5、推进经济体制改革特别是国有企业改革的重要保证。
法律依据
《中华人民共和国社会保险法》
第二十三条 职工应当参加职工基本医疗保险，由用人单位和职工按照国家规定共同缴纳基本医疗保险费。
无雇工的个体工商户、未在用人单位参加职工基本医疗保险的非全日制从业人员以及其他灵活就业人员可以参加职工基本医疗保险，由个人按照国家规定缴纳基本医疗保险费。
