释义	妻子的母亲不一定不能继承遗产。如果被继承人有遗嘱明确说明由妻子的母亲继承遗产的，则妻子的母亲可以继承遗产，否则不能继承遗产。我国法定继承人的范围限于被继承人的近亲属，妻子的母亲不属于近亲属的范围，因此不能按照法定继承继承遗产。【法律依据】《民法典》第一千一百二十七条遗产按照下列顺序继承：（一）第一顺序：配偶、子女、父母；（二）第二顺序：兄弟姐妹、祖父母、外祖父母。继承开始后，由第一顺序继承人继承，第二顺序继承人不继承；没有第一顺序继承人继承的，由第二顺序继承人继承。
