等额选举是指候选人数与应选人数相等的选举制度。在实行等额选举的时候，投票人的权力仅仅体现在，是否决定和认可候选人。等额选举时，候选人得票超过半数则通过。如未达到半数票，我国目前通常的做法是要经过二次、三次等额选举，直到投票通过为止。等额选举与差额选举不同。差额选举指候选人数多于应选人数的选举。差额选举的方式有两种：一是直接采用候选人数多于应选人数的差额选举办法进行正式选举；二是先采用差额选举办法进行预选，产生候选人名单，然后进行正式选举。我国各级人民代表大会代表的选举，都是实行差额选举。法律依据《《选举法》》第三十一条  全国和地方各级人民代表大会代表实行差额选举，代表候选人的人数应多于应选代表的名额。
由选民直接选举人民代表大会代表的，代表候选人的人数应多于应选代表名额三分之一至一倍；由县级以上的地方各级人民代表大会选举上一级人民代表大会代表的，代表候选人的人数应多于应选代表名额五分之一至二分之一。
