IMMUNITY - Exemption from a legal duty, penalty or prosecution.
Obs. An area or group of men exempted from a feudal obligation, or tax.
The constitutional privilege of members of Congress to make verbal statements on the floor & in committee for which they cannot be sued or arrested for slander or libel. Also, freedom from arrest while traveling to or from sessions of Congress or on official business. Members in this status may be arrested only for treason, felonies or a breach of the peace, as defined by congressional manuals.
Under the principles of international law and various conventions immunity against prosecution for most crimes and offenses, as well as immunity from most civil suits, is extended to diplomats of foreign nations.
There are numerous other forms of immunity from being held responsible for a persons actions that are extended to various classes, mostly governmental employees or administrators.
