工信部信息通信发展司闻库司长指出：“5G技术研发试验第三阶段将是5G实现 ‘18岁成人’之前的关键一步”，可见第三阶段测试结果的重要性。

第一阶段 5G技术研发试验
为了验证5G单点关键技术功能和性能，我国在2016年年初正式启动5G技术研发试验，第一阶段试验于2016年9月15日结束。
参加第一阶段测试并贡献突出的厂商一共有7家，包括华为、中兴通讯、大唐电信、爱立信、诺基亚和上海贝尔、英特尔（Intel）、三星。
第二阶段 5G产品研发试验
2016年11月20日，IMT-2020(5G)推进组在北京正式发布了5G技术研发试验第二阶段的技术规范。
2017 年9月 28 日，由工信部主办的第二届5G创新发展高峰论坛上，IMT-2020(5G)推进组发布了中国5G技术研发试验的第二阶段测试结果，并向参与该阶段试验的华为、中兴、大唐、爱立信、上海诺基亚贝尔五家系统厂家，联发科技、展讯、英特尔三家芯片厂家，以及是德、罗德与施瓦茨、大唐联仪三家仪表厂家颁发了证书。
第三阶段 5G系统方案验证
2017年11月23日，工业和信息化部印发通知，启动5G技术研发试验第三阶段工作。
2018年6月14日，国际移动通信标准化组织3GPP正式宣布第五代移动通信（5G）独立组网标准冻结，5G完成了第一阶段全功能标准化工作，5G商用发展进入全面冲刺阶段。
目前，我国5G技术研发试验第三阶段测试已经进入关键期， 2018年中国国际信息通信展上，IMT-2020（5G）推进组将发布中国5G技术研发试验的第三阶段测试结果。
