释义	人民调解委员会在经一方当事人申请后，其不可以直接进行调解。因为人民调解委员会不论采取何种方式受理纠纷，必须充分尊重当事人的自愿。《人民调解法》第十七条规定：“当事人一方明确拒绝调解的，不得调解。”人民调解委员会受理调解申请，必须以双方当事人自愿调解为前提，一方当事人申请，另一方当事人不愿意调解的，人民调解委员会虽可受理，但不能强制其进行调解。另外，在调解过程中，一方当事人不愿继续调解的，应当终止调解。当事人申请调解后又撤回的，人民调解委员会应当尊重当事人的选择，不得强制调解。
