"Legal Lexicon":

HEIR - A person entitled under state laws of intestacy to property of
a decedent who did not have a will. At common law, this term was
restricted to lawfully born children who could inherit land from an
ancestor; under statutes, it includes all those who have the right to
inherit from a deceased person if there is no will specifying how
it's divided.
